Two people died on Monday after a motorbike they had boarded collided with a truck at Arujo bridge along Homa Bay –Rongo Road.

The two men, identified as Alfred Omollo and Collins Opiyo, were heading to Kabunde Social Hall, where the ODM grassroots elections were taking place.

Homa Bay Sub-county Police Commander Emmanuel Kiplagat said the accident occurred when the lorry was overtaking another vehicle.

“The lorry was overtaking another vehicle, leading to a head-on collision between the lorry and the motorcycle which the two men had boarded,” said Kiplagat.

One died on the spot, another succumbed while receiving treatment at Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital, and one survived the incident.

“One of them had died while another one died in our theater,” hospital CEO Vincent Oduor said.

Soon after the incident, a group of youths attempted to attack the driver to torch the lorry for causing the accident.

But the driver sped off and sought protection at Homa Bay Police Station.

“The driver went to a hospital after sustaining injuries because the window panes of his vehicle were broken due to the accident impact. We are conducting investigations, and appropriate legal action will be taken when he is discharged from the hospital,” Kiplagat said.

The motorcycle was also towed to Homa Bay Police Station.

The police boss has urged road users to observe traffic rules.

“Let our youth avoid taking the law into their hands when an accident takes place. They should refer the persons involved to police,” said Kiplagat.

The bodies were moved to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital Morgue.
