Four injured as speeding vehicle runs over pedestrians

Four people, including two students of Mbita High School, are nursing injuries after a vehicle veered off the road and rammed over them in Homa Bay.

The pedestrians were trekking along Sindo-Mbita road in Mbita town when the accident occurred on Wednesday. Residents said the vehicle was speeding before the accident occurred.

The injured persons were rushed to Mbita Sub-county Hospital for medication.

All of them were later transferred to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised medication.

Mbita High School Principal Kennedy Ojijo said they rushed to the scene and rescued the students by taking them for medication.

He explained that the students were travelling back home after closing school for April holidays.

“We have notified parents of the affected students. We are monitoring the learners keenly,” Ojijo said.

According to Mbita Sub-county Police Commander Nathan Sanya, the driver and other passengers who were in a private car disappeared after the accident.

“They abandoned the vehicle and disappeared to an unknown place. It seems they were drunk,” Sanya said.

The police boss said they towed the vehicle to Mbita Police Station for inspection.

“We are conducting investigations into the incident to aid in their arrest. I hope they will come for the vehicle,” Sanya said.
