Africa’s AI Council launches to advance digital transformation
NAIROBI, Kenya, April 12 – The newly formed Africa AI Council is positioning the continent to tap into the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI), with projections estimating a $2.9 trillion contribution to Africa’s economy by 2030.
During the launch of the Africa AI Declaration, leaders emphasized the importance of aligning AI deployment with Africa’s development agenda and ensuring local ownership in shaping digital transformation.
“AI presents enormous opportunities for our continent. It can accelerate the attainment of Agenda 2063, drive innovation, create new industries, and address pressing challenges in healthcare, agriculture, education, energy, and public service delivery,” a representative stated.
Dr. Paulin Basinga, Africa Director at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, echoed this sentiment, noting the importance of locally driven solutions.
“Africa’s digital transformation must be shaped by African priorities, talent, and leadership. By scaling grounded innovations, we can reduce structural inequalities and improve outcomes across sectors,” he said.
He added that the Foundation supports the Africa AI Scaling Hubs initiative, which aims to help countries adopt and expand AI technologies.
Lacina Koné, CEO of Smart Africa, underscored the significance of ethical and inclusive AI development.
“The Africa AI Council marks a vital step in securing Africa’s digital future. AI is more than technology—it’s a tool for prosperity and resilience when guided by the right policies.”
The council’s formation is expected to enhance Africa’s competitiveness, attract investment, and promote inclusive growth by shaping AI adoption to reflect local contexts and aspirations.
